MC039: Evaluating Kellie’s Meads

Episode 39 is a special one for us at the Meadcast. It is the first chance we get to try one of our listener’s meads on air (not counting the pro meads here), and it was a great experience. Tune in to hear us go through a tasting of two fruit and spice meads, one with a cherry mead base and the other pomegranate. Mead tastings are a great thing, and we hope there is some valuable information in here for judging and appreciating the next mead you encounter. Thanks Kellie for agreeing to be the guinea pig!

Drinks in this Episode

Cherry Metheglin
  • Wildflower honey
  • 71b
  • Cherries and vanilla bean in primary
  • Fermented in 2015
  • Notes: Poured a beautiful ruby (Tysen’s lighting was way too yellow in the room). Initial notes of alcohol in the nose that blew off after a few minutes, yielding to vanilla and dark fruit aromatics. There was a little yeastiness left behind from the fermentation, although I can’t definitively say what caused it. It may be autolysis from 71b, as there was a small amount of sediment in the bottle. It’s happened in some of my meads, and pretty much all of those it happened in were 71b. My palette would prefer more cherry. Vanilla flavor really started to pop out after tasting for a few minutes. Will benefit from additional aging.

Pomegranate Metheglin

  • Clover honey
  • EC-1118
  • Pomegranate pulverized by a vitamixer, straining out the seeds
  • Cinnamon, cloves, ginger and allspice in primary
  • Fermented in 2014
  • Notes: Nicely golden, not much color from the pomegranate. Ginger aroma gives way to cinnamon with fruity tropical notes. Honey forward in the taste, balanced well with spices and nice hints of tropical fruit. No harsh notes from the alcohol. Very pleasant to drink. Was sad to only have one bottle 🙁
